Effective and Active Learning – Workshops to Enhance Pedagogical Competencies of University Teachers – EURAXESS

The development of pedagogical competencies among doctoral candidates and university teachers was the focus of two workshops held at the University of Prešov on 4–5 June 2026. Both sessions were led by Bartłomiej Wróblewski, a specialist in higher education teaching and learning development from the Paedagogium Centre at Charles University.

The first workshop focused on effective teaching, which begins already at the stage of course preparation. Participants reflected on how to select learning activities aligned with intended learning outcomes and assessment methods, what constitutes effective teaching, and how it can be successfully implemented. Through practical examples, participants learned how to formulate learning objectives and define expected outcomes that students should achieve and that are subject to evaluation.

The second workshop followed a similar interactive format. Through seminar-based activities, participants explored what active learning is and how it differs from activating teaching methods. Topics included the planning and design of the teaching process, as well as strategies that support active student engagement and self-directed learning. Participants had the opportunity to experience active learning from the student perspective and reflect on the learning process. Discussions also addressed how to create a safe learning environment, emphasizing cooperative learning and individual responsibility among students. Both workshops included space for in-depth discussion and networking among participants.

The event was financially supported by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic.
