Establishing combination Study Programmes (on both Bachelor´s and Master´s degree): Ethics – Social Work and Teaching of Social Work, first and only in Slovakia

Since its foundation in the 2005, the Institute of Educology and Social work (IESP) provides Social Work Bachelor´s, Master´s and PhD. Study Programmes, preparing every year tens of high educated students for social work practice.

Research, publishing and educational collaboration of IESP and organisation from the field of social work practice (municipalities, government, institutions of different level of education) brought the need for closer specialisation of social work absolvents. In early 2000s, during extensive research carried out with local municipality and its social institution, the need for more Ethic in Social Work Education arose. Later on, during the overall accreditation in 2009, Bachelor´s and Master´s Study Program: Ethics - Social work got accredited. Due to lack of support from previous Faculty management, first students of this Study Program were admitted in 2011. Four years later, on demand of secondary education in the field of Social Work (Pedagogical and Social Academy, Business Academy and Associated S), in 2015, Bachelor´s and Master´s Study Program: Teaching of Social Work got its accreditations from both accreditation boards: Social Work and Pedagogy. Since then tens students have graduated in Ethics – Social Work or Teaching of Social Work.

Bachelor´s and Master´s Study Program: Ethics - Social work

Graduates in the field of the Ethics - Social Work have a cross-sectional knowledge from the Ethics - Social Work field of study with a focus on application in a specialized field, including the recognition of its wider contexts. Graduates are competent to use and integrate the acquired knowledge in situational analysis and to apply them according to their acquired skills in solving moral and social conflicts. They can competently solve specialized tasks and coordinate specific activities, organize, lead and bear responsibility for the team work and its results. Graduates are competent to apply their knowledge and skills in challenging and problematic environment, to combine knowledge and manage the complexity of situations. They are able to bear social and ethical responsibility in solving problems. Graduates are competent to actively organize and coordinate the work of expert teams in professional areas in preparation of ethical codes, to guide the work of ethics committees, to manage and implement ethical audit. They are competent to shape moral attitudes of the public through the management of the third sector activities.

Bachelor´s and Master´s Study Program: Teaching of Social Work

Graduates in the field of Teaching of Social Work know the theory and practice of social work in its interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral contexts, have knowledge of the tasks of state administration, public institutions, self-government bodies and non-state subjects in the field of social policy and work and they have competences in the field of education (social work, social services, social counseling and others) as well as competencies and knowledge in the field of social work in the school environment (school social work). The acquired knowledge and skills are used in the specialized field of performance and management of social work, especially in the school environment (school social work), but primarily as teachers of vocational subjects (social work, social services, social counseling etc.) at secondary schools - at Business Academies and Pedagogical and Social Academies.

Both combination Study Programmes: Ethics – Social Work and Teaching of Social Work, offer more possibilities for students to apply for wider scope of placements, at the same time with specialization for specific employment. While the graduate´s in the field Teaching of Social Work will acquire full second higher education in the field of Teaching of Social Work as well as social work with a specific focus on school social work and specific target groups, social risks and public administration activities, graduate´s in the field Ethics – Social Work Study program mostly apply in state administration institutions, public institutions and self-governments, in bodies, groups or professions aimed at preparing, securing and coordinating the activities of codified ethics for the needs of performance and management of social work (e.g. in the preparation of ethical codes, in ethical commissions or ethical audits), in state and non-state social care facilities for children, youth, adults or elderly people, in associations and foundations focusing on community-based social work, in other institutions for  mediating personal and material assistance to people in need and to help socially dependent, disabled, unemployed, lonely, etc., in the area of community, regional and national development and planning.

Both Study Programmes (Ethics – Social Work and Teaching of Social Work) are unique in the Slovak academia. From the nine Slovak universities (seven state and two private) that are preparing the Social Work students, none is providing such a study programmes (nor any of broader Czechoslovak university environment).
