Course Description

Our interdisciplinary PhD programme offers a deep dive into the forces shaping regions today – and tomorrow. Learn across fields: history, political science, globalistics, demography, theories of regional development, methods of geograpical research, and more. Build critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills. Engage with real-world challenges – and become a voice for the future of the regions.

Course curriculum

The doctoral's degree in Regional geography and regional development is a four-year program (240 ECTS). The study plan maintains a balance between natural sciences and humanities courses.

Program Outcome

Graduates are competent to deal with the problems of the relations between the natural environment and human community in a particular region to solve the problems of the spatial organization of society at a regional level leading to application within a specific regional development. Graduates are able to use, improve and develop a theoretical-methodological base of regional geography, the methodology of regional analysis in particular, the theory of regions as a constitutional element of the society, the theory and methodology of regional development, the modelling of regional systems, theory of globalization and its regional consequences.

Career Opportunity

Due to the specifics of the School of Regional Geography and Regional Development, the graduates are applied on the labour market also at the workplaces of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, universities, in the state administration and self-government, etc. They also find employment in solving problems of regional development in private companies and non-profit organizations.

  • Masters’s degree in Geography and Applied Geoinformatics, or Teaching Geography (combined), or a similar field of study,
  • English language competence at B2 (CEFR level)
