Course Description

The aim of education in the field of Biology is to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge based on the current state of science. The graduate has comprehensive general knowledge in the field of Biology. He is able to apply knowledge and solve problems focused on basic biological research and practical tasks of applied biology. He has practical and methodological knowledge of methods of research of living systems at various levels of their organization (molecule, cell, individual, population, community, ecosystem).

Course curriculum

The bachelor´s degree in study programme Biology is a three-year program (180 ECTS). The study plan maintains a balance of knowledge gained within the areas of botany, zoology, and human biology.

Program Outcome

Acquired Knowledge

Graduates will have a broad and cross-cutting knowledge from basic biological scientific disciplines:

  • botany
  • zoology
  • microbiology
  • genetics
  • molecular biology
  • cell biology evolutionary biology
  • as well as knowledge from some chemical disciplines and related natural science disciplines. The graduate has sufficient theoretical knowledge to understand essential facts in biology, which he can creatively apply when solving partial tasks of basic and applied research. He is able to present the acquired knowledge in the field of biology to a wide professional and lay public, including in a foreign language.

 

Skills acquired:

  • use methods of biological and selected chemical and mathematical-statistical scientific disciplines,
  • work with instruments, equipment and materials in the field of basic and applied biological research,
  • analyze and synthesize data obtained in experimental research

 

Competences acquired:

  • possesses theoretical knowledge and understands essential facts, principles and theories in biology,
  • is able to apply them in solving basic and applied biological research,
  • understands the connections between biological scientific disciplines and other natural science disciplines.

 

Career Opportunity

Graduates of the bachelor's degree will find employment in research teams with a biological and chemical focus, in independent scientific and research work at the workplaces of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, universities, in the department of health, agriculture, forestry, food industry, environment, in state administration and self-government, etc. The majority of graduates of the 1st level of the Biology study program (more than 90%) continue their studies at the 2nd level of university studies.

 

Admissions

Entry requirements:

Applicants with completed secondary education with a high school diploma will be admitted to the Bachelor's study program in Biology without an entrance exam, based on the results obtained during secondary school studies (average of end-of-year reports and high school diploma). Applicants who cannot provide documents on obtaining complete secondary general education or complete secondary vocational education and have been granted asylum, subsidiary protection or temporary refuge must take a general study prerequisites test, which will verify their eligibility to study in the selected study program.

Scholarships

At the University of Prešov, outstanding academic performance is rewarded through a merit-based scholarship system. Up to 10% of full-time Bachelor's and Master's degree students may receive a motivational scholarship every semester, based on previous exceptional academic achievements.


Additionally, students may apply for motivational scholarships for extraordinary achievements in sports, arts, or research. These opportunities aim to support and recognize students who not only excel academically but also contribute to university life through talent and innovation.

 

National Scholarship Scheme

Slovakia invites talented students from around the world to pursue their academic goals through the National Scholarship Scheme – Studying in Slovakia Rewards Me. This program offers a scholarship of €5,000 per academic year for two years of full-time Master’s studies at selected public higher education institutions, including the University of Prešov. Master’s program in Management is eligible under this scheme, as it falls within the national Smart Specialisation Strategy (SK RIS3 2021+).


Every year, up to 45 scholarships are awarded at the Master’s level based solely on Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores. To be considered, applicants must achieve a minimum SAT score of 1100. No other test or substitution is accepted.
