Doctoral in Environmental Ecology
Requirements: Master's degree in Ecology and Environmental studies or a similar field of study, English language proficiency at B2 level (CEFR)
Course Description
The PhD Program in Environmental Ecology provides a diverse platform for research in both basic and applied ecology. Topics may range from individual- and species-level ecology, population ecology and community dynamics, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning to biological invasions, and ecological applications in nature protection, aquaculture, sustainable agriculture - offering flexibility to tailor the study focus to individual interests and research goals.
As a PhD candidate, you will develop a profound understanding of biodiversity, ecosystem dynamics, and nature conservation, while exploring sustainable resource use through innovative scientific approaches. Master advanced research methodologies for terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and gain valuable international experience through study visits, fieldwork, and internships abroad.
Our doctoral graduates excel in generating, analyzing, and interpreting ecological data. They contribute to developing novel scientific methods and apply ecological theory to address pressing environmental challenges. Whether focused on conservation strategies, land-use planning, or ecosystem restoration, you will be prepared to lead both theoretical inquiry and practical solutions.
Graduates secure influential roles in nature and landscape protection, environmental governance, international conservation cooperation, research institutions, and academic positions at universities specializing in natural sciences.
Join a vibrant research community dedicated to interdisciplinary exploration, global collaboration, and ecological literacy. At our department, science meets responsibility — and our doctoral program prepares you to lead the way.
Course curriculum
The doctor’s degree in Environmental Ecology Studies is a four-year program (240 ECTS). The study plan is firmly rooted in the natural sciences, with a strong emphasis on ecological theory, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and the scientific foundations of environmental and ecological inquiry. The curriculum combines advanced coursework with independent research, allowing for interdisciplinary integration across biological, environmental, and applied sciences.
Program Outcomes
Graduates will master and creatively develop scientific methods of both basic and applied research, independently addressing complex theoretical and practical problems in the field of ecological and environmental sciences. They will be capable of formulating new hypotheses and strategies for further research and development within the study program. Graduates will apply their own findings from theoretical analysis and comprehensive scientific research to problem-solving. They will be able to design, verify, and implement new procedures and methods, using them in the development of new technologies, technical solutions, and interactive systemic connections.
Skills acquired:
Graduates will independently, creatively, and comprehensively solve demanding tasks related to the application of preventive tools and the care of nature and the environment. They will proficiently use modern information and communication technologies. Graduates will create and implement educational and training programs and will be able to simulate, shape, and model virtual mechanisms of behavior of natural and human systems as well as the consequences of anthropogenic activities on the environment. They will assess the potential for material recycling of various waste types and propose their own methodological procedures for waste processing.
Competences acquired:
Graduates will demonstrate independent, critical, and analytical thinking. They will effectively present research and development results to the professional community. Ethical, scientific, and social aspects will be considered when formulating research objectives and interpreting findings. Graduates will be able to professionally influence research directions and coordinate teams. They will harmonize the activities of stakeholders in solving environmental problems at local and regional levels. They will be capable of leading broad interdisciplinary scientific teams. Graduates will apply their expertise in research institutions, universities, the corporate sector.
Career Opportunity
Graduates of the program can pursue diverse career paths across environmental ecology and related specializations. Potential roles include:
Landscape Ecologist, Geoecologist, Air Quality Specialist, Nature Conservation Specialist, Waste Management Specialist, Forest Protection Specialist, Watercourse Protection Specialist, Environmental Protection Specialist (excluding Industrial Ecology)
In the field of Industrial Ecology, graduates may work as:
Biologist, Soil microbiologist, Water Quality Control Specialist, Environmental Protection Specialist in Industrial Production, Hydrologist, Industrial Ecology Specialist.
Additional roles include:
