Studies Association (ITSA) Biennial Conference in Riga, Latvia, 17-20 September, 2024.

ITSA 2024 is co-organized by Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, the International Tourism Studies Association (ITSA) and the International Journal of Tourism Cities (IJTC).

The overall theme of the event is: “Bridging gaps in tourism knowledge and practice: the future of sustainable, smart and secure tourism and hospitality”. There are four sub-themes in the areas of security, the new traveler, circular economy and urban tourism research.

“It is with pleasure and enthusiasm that we warmly invite the upcoming 10th ITSA Biennial Conference, a distinguished meeting that will convene in the charming capital of Latvia, Riga. As the third largest city in Northern Europe, Riga provides an enchanting backdrop for the exchange of knowledge, insights and ideas in the dynamic field of tourism” (said Agita Livina, Professor, University Vidzemes and conference president).

The conference will serve as a nexus for academia, industry professionals and researchers to explore and deliberate on crucial themes shaping the contemporary tourism landscape. The overall theme of the conference evolves closely around three key dimensions: safety and security, changes in traveler behavior and the imperative of circularity in tourism. These critical facets require concerted attention from educators, researchers, and industry practitioners. Through collaborative efforts, the event aims to fill existing gaps in tourism knowledge and practice, propelling society towards a future marked by sustainable, smart and secure tourism and hospitality.

“ITSA is uniquely dedicated to scientific exchange between researchers and practitioners focusing on the growth of tourism worldwide. Founded in 2006 in Hangzhou, China, ITSA is an unincorporated charity based in London, United Kingdom. ITSA is committed to developing a global tourism leadership forum that facilitates the improvement of global hospitality and tourism. ITSA is unique among international associations of academics and tourism professionals. Its mission is to encourage interaction and cooperation between members from developing and developed countries” (Professor Cinà van Zyl, President of ITSA, University of South Africa).

“The International Journal of Tourism Cities (IJTC) is the only academic journal exclusively dedicated to urban tourism research. A peer-reviewed journal, IJTC provides an international forum for the study of urban tourism and tourist cities. The journal aims to be interdisciplinary in its appreciation of tourist cities and tourism in urban areas. IJTC has the highest first quarter rating on the Scopus journal ranking system” (Professor J. Andres Coca-Stefaniak, IJTC Co-Editor-in-Chief). The IJTC welcomes original and theoretically informed articles from those involved in planning, managing or marketing tourism in the city destination or in places adjoining urban areas. The IJTC has four distinct objectives:

• Encourage greater research and scholarship related to urban tourism.
• Stimulate more interdisciplinary research on tourism in cities, particularly the integration of theories and principles from tourism and urban studies.
• Generate more research studies on tourism on the outskirts of cities, where urban and rural areas converge.
• Create more literature on best practices in urban tourism worldwide through in-depth analyzes and production of exemplary case studies.
