Active summer semester at DTHM FMB UP

Due to the diverse range of services offered by tourism companies, the focus of the subjects in the study program Tourism, Hospitality and Spa industry is also branched. Another professional excursion was aimed at understanding the issues of sustainable development of cultural and urban tourism, by visiting the cultural and historical prerequisites that Prešov as a city has. Such was the excursion of the national cultural monument Solivar, which is one of the most important technical monuments in Slovakia. It is a unique complex of technical objects for pumping and cooking salt from the brine, originating from the 17th century and located in the town´s part Solivar. This visit made it possible to travel back in time and at the same time think about the importance and necessity of implementing sustainable concepts. The tour was led by the tour guides through the visit to four buildings - the Leopold shaft, the crucible (brine reservoirs), the boiler room, and the salt storage (chambers). All this enhanced the understanding of bridging cultural potential, tourism as well as the importance of sustainability.

Next in a line was practical excursion within the subject of Sports and Recreational Activities and Animation, at the first level of study, in the field of study Economics and Management". The excursion was implemented as one of the practical lessons. The students gained valuable information about the functioning of the recreation and leisure facility Outdoor park Prešov. During the excursion, they also had the opportunity to try practical obstacles or a climbing wall. The students enjoyed it and stated that the practical lessons are really motivating for them.

The last, full-day excursion in the summer semester AR 2022/2023 was realized in the Tokaj region. It was aimed at the sustainable development of rural tourism, through diverse assumptions such as natural potential, historical potential, viticultural potential and tourist attractions, as an element of supporting visitation and sustainability of the region. With its content, it bridged the prerequisites for a deeper understanding of the issue and the importance of connecting several types of potential into compact sustainable units - tourism products. As part of the day-long program, the students could see Camping in Malá Bara, the only one of its kind in the region, which has an ongoing project called "Unconventional living in treetops for lovers of ecotourism and beneficial moments of relaxation in wellness". Subsequently, it was a tour of the lowest point in the Slovak Republic at Klin nad Bodrogom. It was followed by the entrance to the newly reconstructed historical building of the Rákoczi mansion. The guided tour of the Rákoczi Castle in the village of Borša, the discussion with the management about the realized restoration of the monument, its vision, further direction and conception of the product for further maintenance were valuable and beneficial not only for students but also for teachers. The final destination of the planned excursion was the vine growing village of Malá Tŕňa. A tour of the tourist attraction in the form of an Observation tower in Malá Tŕňa, a tour of rural tourism facilities linked to viticulture activities, or wine cellars enhanced the pleasant experience of visiting the Tokaj region.

It can be concluded that for the students of the study program Tourism, Hospitaltiy and Spa Industry, activities of this kind are very stimulating to connect theoretical knowledge with real examples from practice, through meeting with experts directly in selected tourism destinations.
