He gained his PhD degree in Management and Business Economics at the Faculty of Business Administration of the University of Economics in Prague, the Czech Republic in 1998.
He was appointed an associate professor in the field of study Business Economics and Management at the Faculty of Economics of VŠB Technical University of Ostrava, the Czech Republic in 2000.
He was appointed a university professor in the field of study Business Economics and Management at the Faculty of Economics of VŠB Technical University of Ostrava, the Czech Republic in 2005.
At the second level of higher education, he is a graduate of the two higher education institutions – the Higher Education Institution of Economics in Bratislava, Faculty of Management, with specialisation in Automated Management Systems (1987, Ing.) as well as of the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik, Faculty of Education, field of study Mathematics – Chemistry.
He has been a full university professor at the Faculty of Management of University of Prešov in Prešov in the field of study Management since 2005. There he guarantees all degrees of study in the field of science Management and further accreditation rights (right to habilitation proceedings and professor appointment procedure).
On 1 October 2004, prof. Ing. Dr. Róbert Štefko, Ph.D. established the Faculty of Management of the University of Prešov in Prešov and since then he been a guarantor of all levels of study as well as the Dean of the faculty. He is the founder (1989) and the main developing factor of the first master’s economic-managerial study at the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University Košice (in the first phase) at the Department of Management of the Faculty of Arts in Prešov and among other things, the creator of the concept of university marketing of studies at the PJŠU Košice in Prešov on the basis of the so called reproductive cycles of quality inputs, the system for maximizing the attractiveness of the organisation in the perception of target audience, with evaluation based on responsive models as well as other concepts in this field. He is the pioneer in implementing related strategies in the Slovak competitive environment. After putting his strategies into practice (since 2004), an enormous and long-lasting interest in the study at the Faculty of Management of University of Prešov in Prešov has been reported – since the establishment of the faculty. This applicants’ interest in the study was in the course of several years the highest in the Slovak Republic (in recent years it has been one of the highest).
He is a member of the DEAN - Deans' European and Academics Network, Brussels, Belgium; a member of TIIKM- The International Institute of Knowledge Management (the member of the advisory board), Sri Lanka; a member of NECSTouR (Network of European Regions Committed to the Issue of Sustainable Tourism), Brussels, Belgium; a member of the ČMS (Czech Marketing Company), Prague. He was a member of Scientific Board of publication - Interdisciplinary Approach to Sustainable Development edited ISI Pierrard, HEC du Luxemburg, Virton, Belgique 2007, Belgium Depot Légal: D/2007/9727/4. Until 2006 he was a member of the two working groups of the Accreditation Commission, an advisory body of the Slovak government, for Economics and Management, currently he is a member of the commission for the research grant agency VEGA No. 13 for economic and legal sciences (since 2012).
In the USA, he was awarded Management Certificate by the American state university Wichita State University, W. Frank Barton School of Business, the USA, 27 April 1995.
He is on the editorial boards (and scientific boards) of 12 foreign and domestic scientific journals (one in Serbia, two in Poland, one in Portugal, two in the Czech Republic, six in Slovakia) and he is the chairperson of the editorial board of the scientific research journal: Journal of Management and Business: Research and Practice.
At present, his research focuses mainly on marketing of intangible products, marketing management of services as well as on marketing communication policy and within it on selected strategies of public relations dominance of selected organisations in the tertiary sphere. His most recent research topics include, for example marketing of fine arts, marketing of specific areas of tourism, marketing of projects and regional development, human resource marketing, marketing communication policy of regional towns and others. He also devotes himself to the theme of managers’ coping with difficult situations, mainly in the context of managing sales representatives and personal sale as a part of marketing communication policy. He also concentrates on the effectiveness of decision-making processes in investment decisions. He was a member of a successfully accomplished project Centre of Excellence in the Research of Cognition (CEVKOG).
He has participated in 15 research international and domestic projects, of which he has led seven. (He has also been a project manager of a development project funded by the EU). All his projects have finished successfully.
Currently, he is a principal investigator on the international research project “Research of the Current State and Marketing Communication Possibilities of Significant Cultural–Religious and Pilgrimage Sites in the Region of Prešov and the Region Slaskie through Interned-Based Tools with an Emphasis on Social Networks“ (MVTS APVV, SK-PL-0061-12, Poland, Slovakia) and the following research projects:
He is a principal investigator of VEGA research project, a deputy head of a project leader of another VEGA research project, a co-investigator on a foreign research project (Russia, Dubna) and a member of one KEGA research project.
Up to now, he has been a member of nine faculty and university scientific boards (seven faculty and two university scientific boards) at universities in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. He is the Chairperson of the Scientific Board of the Faculty of Management and Business of University of Prešov in Prešov.
