Institute of History
The Institute of History at the Faculty of Arts, Prešov University in Prešov is academic workplace with more than 60 years long history and it has been part of the faculty since its beginning. The organisation structure of the Institute consists of four departments: Department of the oldest, medieval and early modern history, Department of modern and the most modern general history, Department of modern and the most modern Slovak history, and Department of archival sciences and auxiliary historical sciences.
The Institute of History is established as the academic workplace of history studies achieving and also going beyond and exceeding the Slovak context by its specific, scientific and pedagogical activities.
The Institute of History provides study in 8 accredited study programmes: 3 Bachelor degree study programmes (teacher-training study programmes – History and other pedagogical subjects and non-teacher training study programmes History, Archives studies and Auxiliary historical sciences), 3 Master degree study programmes (teacher-training study programmes – History and other pedagogical subjects and non-teacher training study programmes History, Archives studies and Auxiliary historical sciences) and 2 post-graduate study programmes (General and Slovak history). The Institute is privileged to undertake examina rigorosa and examina rigorosa thesis defence in study programmes History, Archives studies and teacher-training study programmes in specialisation with History. The Institute is also privileged to undertake habilitation and inauguration processes/professor appointments procedures in the fields of study History and Slovak History.
The Institute of History closely cooperates with Slovak and specialized history institutions in foreign countries, and students and creative professionals of the Institute are provided possibilities to take part in mobilities at 13 European universities. Graduates of the Institute of History at Prešov Univesity in Prešov can find work in various work fields: as teachers at primary and secondary types of schools, schools of higher education and universities, as employees in museums, art galleries, science institutions, Slovak and foreign archives, as diplomatic employees, employees in state administration, managers and mass media employees.
Research
Research work originates in research aims of the institute staff members. The integrating fields of research are the periods of medieval and modern period history and the period of the 19th and 20th century history. The major research fields are the following: prehistoric settlement of Eastern Slovakia, settlement of Eastern Slovakia in medieval period and early modern history period, religious and ecclesiastical history, issues of emigration from the territory of Slovakia in different time periods, history of towns in Eastern Slovakia, issues of regions within the whole historical context, history of Hungarian Empire, issues of migration processes in history, selected issues of Central and Eastern Europe, history of Russia in the 20th century, history of Slovakia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The research focus of the institute staff members results in science and research projects participation. The institute staff members worked and still work in the projects VEGA, KEGA, APVV, and they are involved in the activity of the Centre of Socio-Historical and Cultural-Historical Excellence at Prešov University in Prešov. The results of research and science activities are available in the institutional periodicals: Annales historici Presovienses, Historia Eclesiastica and the internet periodical Dejiny.sk .
