INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Institute of Greek Language and Culture was established as a new workplace at the Orthodox Theological Faculty of the University of Prešov in 2012.
RESEARCH-PEDAGOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The field of Greek language is focused on the teaching of Greek language and culture, a deeper understanding of Greek history, philosophy, theology and culture from antiquity to the present. The modern Greek language is a direct successor to classical Greek, New Testament Greek and Byzantine koine. It is also the official language of two EU member states (Greece and Cyprus). Almost 11 million people in Greece and Cyprus and another almost 8 million people in the Greek diaspora around the world speak Modern Greek. A translation center is being built at the department, where students prepare to translate Greek theological and philosophical texts into Slovak. Upon successful completion of their studies, they have the opportunity to continue their studies at Greek universities through the ERASMUS program and may also receive a scholarship from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic.
