Midwifery graduate profile

A graduate of the 1st degree of university studies in the Obstetrics and Gynecology study program is a health worker who has the professional competence, knowledge, skills and competence to provide nursing care in accordance with the Decree of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic dated April 1, 2018 no. 95 / 2018 Coll., which determines the scope of nursing practice provided by a nurse independently, independently based on a doctor's indication and in cooperation with a doctor, and the scope of midwifery practice provided by a midwife independently, independently based on a doctor's indication and in cooperation with a doctor, and in accordance with the Regulation of the Government of the Slovak Republic no. 296/2010 Coll. on the professional competence for the performance of the health profession, the method of further education of health workers, the system of specialized fields and the system of certified work activities, as amended.

Graduates of the study program gain knowledge and acquire skills and competencies:

Knowledge:

A graduate of the field of obstetrics (hereinafter referred to as PA) knows the principles of PA and is able to apply them in his profession. He is generally educated and professionally prepared in such a way that he understands the connections between nursing science - midwifery, biomedical sciences, social sciences and human sciences and was able to transform this knowledge into a holistic approach in the practice of a midwife.
A PA graduate has theoretical knowledge from fields that describe the organs and systems of a healthy and sick person and that deal with his psychological processes and characteristics, as well as the social environment, cultural influences, spirituality, faith and worldview.
The graduate is able to make independent and qualified decisions, has the ability to manage and provide care - preventive, supportive, curative, rehabilitative - to women with gynecological diseases, women during pregnancy, during childbirth, in the postpartum period, newborns, infants, as well as their families and groups of healthy women, within primary, secondary and follow-up health care. She knows how to educate clients - their families and medical staff, she has the ability to actively and effectively integrate into the medical team, she knows how to develop midwifery practice, think critically and work in research. The graduate is able, based on his knowledge, skills, and social maturity, to contribute to the professionalization of midwifery and increasing the prestige and status of midwives in society.

Skills:

A graduate of midwifery is able to make independent decisions and be responsible for them within the framework of primary, secondary and follow-up health care for a woman, is able to implement diagnostic, therapeutic, nursing, rehabilitation and educational procedures and techniques in PA, monitor PA nursing problems and ensure comprehensive care through the method of the nursing process, apply models of nursing in PA, use individual investigation methods and procedures in assessing the health and state of health of women, newborns, infants as well as their families, apply methods and techniques of research work in PA, apply knowledge of law and legislation in PA, provide qualified first aid for injuries and life-threatening conditions. A midwifery graduate is able to perform specific practical skills for midwifery students resulting from the EU Regulation 80/155EEC: counseling for pregnant women, including performing 100 prenatal examinations, supervision and care of at least 40 pregnant women, performing 40 births, or if this number cannot be reached, this criterion can be reduced to 30 births and 20 birth assistances, assistance in 1-2 breech births, episiotomy and subsequent suture, supervision and care of 40 women during high-risk pregnancies, at least 100 postnatal examinations of the 6-week period , at least 100 examinations of physiological newborns, supervision and care of pathological newborns.

Competencies:

Midwifery is a field of study from the system of fields of study administered by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic as a field of knowledge (§ 50 paragraph 1 of Act No. 131/2002), in which a graduate of the study program (§ 51 paragraph 1 of Act No. 131/2002) acquires professional competence/competence to perform his original profession or prepares to continue further university studies.

The profile of a graduate of midwifery is in accordance with the Decree of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic No. 244 of July 22, 2019 on the system of study fields of the Slovak Republic.

The description of work activities is defined by Decree of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic no. 95/2018 Coll., which determines the scope of nursing practice provided by a nurse independently, independently based on a doctor's indication and in cooperation with a doctor, and the scope of midwifery practice provided by a midwife independently, independently based on a doctor's indication and in cooperation with a doctor.
