Study program Laboratory testing methods in healthcare

Laboratory testing methods in health care is a study program included in the study field of Health Sciences in the System of Study Fields of the Slovak Republic published in the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Slovak Republic Decree no. 244/2019 as an area of knowledge in which the graduate of the study program (§ 50 and 51 paragraph 1 of Act No. 131/2002 on universities and on the amendment and supplementation of certain regulations and on the amendment and supplementation of certain laws) acquires the professional ability / competence to perform his original profession or prepares to continue further university studies.

b) Degree of study: 1. – bachelor's study program

c) Standard length of study: full-time study – 3 years, external form of study – 3 years

d) Degree awarded after successful completion of studies: Bc. – bachelor's degree

e) Title of occupation after graduation: medical laboratory technician

 

Graduates of the study program Laboratory testing methods in health care are qualified health workers with a broad professional profile.

A graduate of the study program is prepared to:

• perform laboratory examinations according to standard analytical methods, the purpose of which is to detect changes under physiological and pathological conditions

• apply acquired knowledge and skills in solving work problems independently

• provide professional first aid

• apply modern methods and style of work

• participate in teamwork, organization and workplace management

The aim is to prepare graduates with the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

• graduates master the basic features of decision-making processes in the indication of all laboratory examinations that are common to individual medical departments, including those that have a clinical and laboratory component

• they know how to cooperate with experts in these medical disciplines, which make up joint investigative components, when applying special diagnostic algorithms

• they know how to analyze and synthesize the acquired knowledge so that their activity helps clinical and treatment activities for the benefit of the patient.

 

Theoretical knowledge

A graduate of the study program "Laboratory testing methods in healthcare" - 1st degree will understand the basic principles and concepts of laboratory medicine and acquire the necessary knowledge

associated with diagnostic processes that use in vitro testing and appropriate functional tests. Gain knowledge about factors that can significantly affect the reliability of laboratory methods, especially in the indicative pre-analytical and interpretive phase of the examination. Get an overview of the methods used in the analytical phase of the laboratory examination, as well as possible analytical interferences. He will acquire the theoretical knowledge necessary to ensure the management of reliability control, quality control. Also knowledge about safety measures and protection of work with biological material in clinical workplaces and in laboratories, about legal regulations and ethical principles applicable in work with biological material. He will also acquire basic knowledge in connection with the management and economy of workplaces with the application of information systems. Acquiring knowledge about bedside testing and self-monitoring is also a very important area.

 

Practical skills and competences

A graduate of the study program "Laboratory testing methods in healthcare" - 1st degree will acquire the ability to navigate documentation, gain practical knowledge in the work of a laboratory information system, in connection with information systems in clinics, respectively. to the hospital information system. He will also acquire the ability to work in databases, affecting both the professional foundations (and details) of the study program, but also in databases informing about environmental medicinal and other influences on laboratory information. He will practically gain experience that will enable the graduate to maintain contact with the development of the field, modern trends of the field, but also with developments in the areas characterizing the specifics of the fields forming the basis of Laboratory testing methods in healthcare. Acquires practical knowledge of working with point-of-care testing analyzers at clinical workplaces, as well as devices used in self-monitoring (glucometers, bilirubinometers, single-purpose coagulometers, blood picture analyzers, etc.), as well as dry chemistry methods used for this purpose , in monitoring congenital metabolic disorders, pharmaceuticals, drugs and toxic environmental influences. He will master the basics of indication of transfusions and transfusion techniques and basic parameters of nutrition monitoring.

A graduate of the study program "Laboratory testing methods in healthcare" - 1st degree can work effectively as a member of a research team, organize their own education and maintain contact with developments in their field, as well as apply ethical principles in their practice

A graduate of the study program "Laboratory testing methods in health care" - 1st degree masters the issues of laboratory technology and management. These are professionally highly responsible jobs with the necessary independence in decision-making and adaptability to changing conditions. He controls a wide system of methods of laboratory techniques in individual medical fields with application in the process of treatment and preventive care. In addition to deep theoretical training, he masters the practical skills of a wide range of methods and procedures of laboratory technology and the ability of complex professional thinking and action.

Completion of the study program will enable graduates to perform the following occupations specified in the National Qualifications System within the corresponding level of the Slovak Qualifications Framework (level 6):

• medical laboratory technician

A graduate of the Bachelor's study program Laboratory testing methods in health care acquires a professional qualification for the performance of a profession according to Government Regulation no. 296/2010 on the professional qualification for the performance of the health profession, the method of further education of health workers, the system of specialized fields and the system of certified work activities and according to Act no. 578/2004 Coll. on health care providers, health workers, professional organizations in the health sector and as amended.

Based on available information from 2019, up to 77% of graduates of the 1st degree of the Bachelor's study program Laboratory Investigation Methods in Healthcare worked in a graduated education program. The study program Laboratory testing methods in healthcare was included in the TOP 3 jobs in which graduates worked in the monitored year.

The graduate will be able to work independently in the departments of laboratory medicine (clinical biochemistry, hematology and transfusion, microbiology, immunology, genetics, toxicology, pathological anatomy, clinical pharmacology, functional diagnostics), organize work in the laboratory and cooperate with clinical workplaces in solving diagnostic and therapeutic problems as part of the treatment-preventive process.

The graduate will receive a full first-degree university education in the study program Laboratory investigation methods in health care with an orientation to the provision of health care.
