SUSTAINABILITY - KNOWN/UNKNOWN

In a world where environmental challenges demand our immediate attention, the Faculty of Management and Business organised a creative workshop Sustainability - Known/Unknown. The workshop was held on 20.10.2023 at the Centre for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, which was established at FMB with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, within the framework of the Green Universities Project. This event provided an inspiring platform for our students to delve into the critical aspects of sustainability and circularity.

The themes of the workshop were:

  • Are we (un)sustainable? - Lecturer: doc. Ing. Emília Huttmanová, PhD.
  • Where to look for and find sustainability footprints (best practice) - Lecturer: Ing. Martin Rovňák, PhD.
  • Energy sustainability creatively - Lecturer. Jana Chovancová, PhD.

One of the key points was a "hands-on" activity where students constructed models of solar and wind energy systems. This creative activity not only introduced the principle of renewable energy sources, but also made it possible to establish a stronger link between theory and real-life applications.

The students actively participated in an online survey, sharing their thoughts on sustainability and their expectations for its inclusion in their curricula. The aim of the questionnaire was to understand their perspective on the importance of sustainability and the role it should play in their academic and later professional path. The responses, which were varied and thought-provoking, showed the depth of interest in sustainability among students and provided us with valuable information for curriculum design processes.

The workshop series, that are a part of the KEGA 010PU-4/2023, KEGA 024PU-4/2023 and VEGA 1/0508/21 and COST Action CA 21103 Implementation of Circular Economy in the Built Environment (CircularB) projects, will continue with lectures by experts from business practice and the public sphere, as well as presentations of business models and approaches with elements of sustainability and circularity.
We believe that, that among others due to participatory techniques, we have succeeded in generating interest and motivating students to think creatively on the topic of sustainable lifestyles and to arouse their interest in other upcoming events.
