Department of Systematic Theology

Institutional Formation of the Department

        The Greek Catholic Theological Faculty of Prešov, University in Prešov follows in the activities of the Academia Theologica, founded in 1880 by the Bishop of Prešov, ThDr. Mikuláš Tóth. Its activity was halted in 1950, during the forced liquidation of the Greek Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia.

The study of Catholic Theology in Prešov was reopened in 1990 after the foundation of the Greek Catholic Theological Faculty, which was was incorporated into the union of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (pursuant to Act No. 163/1990, para 1 (4), 3 May 1990).

         Pursuant to Act No. 361/1996 on the division of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, the University of Prešov in Prešov was established on 1 January 1997 and the Faculty of Greek Catholic Theology became its integral part. Since 1 September 2005, the Faculty bears its current name. On 28 October 2014, by the Decree No. 1013/2011, issued by the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome, the Faculty of Greek Catholic Theology was granted a status of ecclesiastical faculty.

    A department is the core scientific and teaching unit of the Faculty. Dean of the Faculty, after the approval of the Academic Senate of GTF, makes decisions on establishment, merger, amalgamation, division or dissolution of the Faculty departments. Since the restoration of the Faculty in 1990, the Department of Systematic Theology has gone through changes (in terms of personnel and terminology):

        The above-mentioned lists of «Names of the Department/s» and «Heads of the Department/s» show that the present-day Department of Systematic Theology was established after the merger of two departments (these departments and their heads are highlighted in green and blue, respectively) and is their direct successor. The proposal to merge the two departments was approved as the resolution No. 22 by the Academic Senate of the GTF at the 13 August 2007 meeting. Since 1990, the two predecessors of the Department have provided, with minimal modifications, the courses that are today the core courses provided and guaranteed by the Department of Systematic Theology.
