About the Faculty
The Greek Catholic Theological Faculty, University of Prešov (Facultatis Theologiae Graecae Catholicae Universitatis Presoviensis in Latin) is a successor to the Academia Theologica, founded in 1880 by Bishop of Prešov, ThDr. Mikuláš Tóth. Its activities were interrupted in 1950, following the forced liquidation of the Greek Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia. Studies in Catholic theology in Prešov were resumed in 1990, when the Faculty was incorporated into the union of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. Pursuant to the Act No. 361/1996 on the division of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University, the University of Prešov was established on 1 January 1997 and the Faculty of Greek Catholic Theology became its integral part. Since 1 September 2005, the Faculty bears its current name. On 28 October 2014, by the Decree No. 1013/2011, issued by the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome, the Greek Catholic Theological Faculty was granted a status of an ecclesiastical faculty.
In terms of the Canon Law, the Faculty is governed by the Apostolic Constitution Sapientia Christiana promulgated by John Paul II on 15 April 1979, by the Ordinationes issued by the Congregation for Catholic Education on 29 April 1979 annexed to the Constitution, by the norms of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (can. 646 – 650; CCEO) and by the Apostolic Constitution Veritatis Gaudium on Ecclesiastical Universities and Faculties promulgated by Pope Francis.
Education at the Faculty focuses on creative philosophical and scientific knowledge in its own disciplines and related areas of science and school practice. A special task of the Faculty is to take care of the scientific and theological formation of those preparing for the priesthood and those who are preparing to hold some particular ecclesiastical and public offices. The Faculty provides education in the framework of accredited study programmes in all three levels of higher education.
The core organizational unit of the Faculty is made of four departments:
- Department of Philosophy and European Studies
- Department of Systematic Theology
- Department of Historical Sciences
- Department of Social Sciences and Humanities
The Faculty management consists of Dean and two Vice-Deans: Vice-Dean for Science, International Relations, Development and Marketing and Vice-Dean for Education, Accreditation and Quality Assurance. Administrative tasks of individual organisational units of the Faculty are carried out by the respective offices and departments as defined in the Organisational Rules of the Faculty.
