Course Description

The Master’s programme in Physiotherapy at the University of Prešov is designed for students seeking a dynamic, internationally relevant education in therapeutic rehabilitation. The programme combines advanced theoretical knowledge, practical clinical skills, and evidence-based approaches to prepare graduates for diverse roles in healthcare systems. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary learning, scientific research, and real-world application in clinical settings. Students gain expertise in functional diagnostics, modern physiotherapy methods, and rehabilitation planning, while also developing leadership, communication, and team management skills essential for today’s healthcare environment. 
Graduates are fully prepared to work independently, contribute to health promotion, and pursue further academic or research opportunities. 
To be eligible for admission to the Master's degree programme (Mgr.) in Physiotherapy at the Faculty of Health Care, University of Prešov, applicants must hold a completed Bachelor's degree (first cycle of higher education) in Physiotherapy. In addition, applicants must demonstrate adequate proficiency in English to follow academic instruction and coursework successfully.

Curriculum

According to the Study Rules of the University of Prešov, the recommended study plan is defined by the list of compulsory and compulsory optional courses (subjects) and the recommended range of optional subjects, their credit and time allowance, and recommended semesters of their implementation so that the scope of direct teaching activities is 22 to 24 lessons per week.
The Master study programme is designed for a standard length of study, i.e., 2 years, and the standard workload is approximately 60 credits per academic year. The total number of credits for the whole study is 120 credits.


The study plan includes:

  • compulsory subjects (13 weeks – one semester)
  • compulsory optional subjects (13 weeks – one semester)
  • optional subjects (13 weeks – one semester)


The total number of credits students can obtain for compulsory subjects is 108, representing 86.40 % of the total credits required to complete their studies. In comparison, credits for compulsory subjects constitute 70-80% of the credits necessary for graduation.


Profile courses:
The study programme is structured to ensure that professional content and course components meet practical requirements for graduate competencies. Learning outcomes and course completion criteria comply with Slovak regulations on credit systems and healthcare professional standards. The programme follows national legislation and guidelines, including Acts No. 131/2002, 578/2004, 576/2004, and Government Regulation No. 296/2010, as well as Ministry of Education Decrees No. 614/2002 and 244/2019, ensuring alignment with legal and professional standards for education and healthcare practice.

The study program is composed of the combination of knowledge-based tasks, practical assignments and projects using a range of methods and teaching forms such as lectures, seminars, presentations, case studies, discussions, group work, project work, consultations, supervision, the Diploma Thesis Project, Diploma Thesis Defence and activating teaching methods (simulation methods, methods developing critical thinking, problem-solving methods, etc.).

Upon successful completion of the Master’s study programme in Physiotherapy, the graduate demonstrates the following profile of knowledge, skills, and competencies, in accordance with the learning outcomes defined by the programme:


Knowledge acquired
The graduate of the Master’s programme in Physiotherapy:

  • Understands the morphology, physiology, and pathology of body systems, especially the musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory systems.
  • Has knowledge of disease mechanisms, epidemiology, hygiene, health promotion, and preventive care.

  • Knows the principles of kinesiology, pathokinesiology, functional diagnostics, and modern physiotherapeutic methods
  • Understands the physical basis, indications, and physiological effects of physiotherapy, electrotherapy, balneology, and relaxation techniques.

Skills acquired
The graduate is able to:

  • Perform functional diagnostics, evaluate kinesiological findings, and apply them in therapy planning.
  • Independently design, implement, and adjust physiotherapy and rehabilitation programmes based on patient condition.

Admissions

Main requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Physiotherapy. If obtained outside Slovakia or the Czech Republic, diploma recognition (nostrification) is required. Nostrification can be processed at the University of Prešov or another Slovak university offering a related study programme
  • English language proficiency → verified by certificate or online interview
  • A certificate of medical fitness issued by a general practitioner. The submission of this certificate is a prerequisite for admission and serves as evidence of compliance with the medical fitness criteria for the exercise of the profession, as stipulated by Decree No. 364/2009 of the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic, which sets forth the health requirements for applicants to medical study programmes.
  • As a condition of enrollment, students are required to submit a medical certificate confirming completion of vaccination against the hepatitis B virus (e.g., with Engerix-B or an equivalent registered vaccine).

  • Proof of English language competence or an Online interview (language assessment) conducted by the Faculty
  • Medical Fitness Certificate - As part of the application process, applicants are required to submit a certificate of medical fitness issued by a general practitioner. The document must confirm that the applicant is medically fit to study and practice physiotherapy. It must be officially translated into English (if issued in another language) and certified by a notary. Both the original and the certified translation must be submitted.
  • Structured Curriculum Vitae
  • Proof of payment of the application fee (50 EUR)
  • Power of Attorney (if the applicant will not handle enrolment in person) – Must be notarized and signed.

Scholarships

At the University of Prešov, outstanding academic performance is rewarded through a merit-based scholarship system. Up to 10% of full-time Bachelor's and Master's degree students may receive a motivational scholarship every semester, based on previous exceptional academic achievements.

Additionally, students may apply for motivational scholarships for extraordinary achievements in sports, arts, or research. These opportunities aim to support and recognize students who not only excel academically but also contribute to university life through talent and innovation.

National Scholarship Scheme

Slovakia invites talented students from around the world to pursue their academic goals through the National Scholarship Scheme – Studying in Slovakia Rewards Me. This program offers a scholarship of €5,000 per academic year for two years of full-time Master’s studies at selected public higher education institutions, including the University of Prešov. Master’s program in Management is eligible under this scheme, as it falls within the national Smart Specialisation Strategy (SK RIS3 2021+).

Every year, up to 45 scholarships are awarded at the Master’s level based solely on Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores. To be considered, applicants must achieve a minimum SAT score of 1100. No other test or substitution is accepted.
