Institute of Hungarian Language and Culture

Institutional development of the workplace:

     The Institute of Hungarian Language and Culture has been operating at the University of Prešov since 2011. On Thursday, November 10, 2011, the Rector of the University of Prešov, prof. RNDr. René Matlovič, PhD. officially opened a new scientific-pedagogical university-wide workplace. The then vice-president of the NRSR Ing. also participated in the ceremonial inauguration of this workplace. Béla Bugár, Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic doc. PhDr. Rudolf Chmel, DrSc., Consul General of the Republic of Hungary in Košice Czimbalmosné Molnár Éva, rector of ELTE University in Budapest prof. Mezey Barna and vice-rector for science, doctoral studies and accreditation of the University of Prešov prof. Peter Kónya, PhD.

Until now, a complex scientific research center has not been created in eastern Slovakia, which would provide in-depth and comprehensive information about the language, literature and culture of the Hungarian nation and the Hungarian minority living in Slovakia from the past to the present. It was for this reason that the Institute of Hungarian Language and Culture was established at the University of Prešov in Prešov. The second reason was an external stimulus based on the current situation of minorities. More than 130,000 inhabitants of the Slovak Republic of Hungarian nationality live in the territory of the Košice and Prešov regions, who did not have the opportunity to obtain higher education in their language in this territory.

Personnel structure:

Educators from Slovakia and Hungary participate in the education of national minorities in the East Slovak region. Docents from the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Dr. habil. Gintli Tibor, DrSc., Dr. habil. Szili Katalin, CSc., Dr. habil. Laczkó Krisztina Renáta, PhD.; assistant professors Mgr. Alexandra Gaál Németyová, PhD., PaedDr. Rudolf Radics, PhD.; and lecturer Dr. habil. Barna Ábrahám, PhD.

Accredited study programs and rights

As a scientific-pedagogical workplace of the University of Prešov, the institute is currently responsible for the bachelor's degree teaching program of Hungarian language and literature in the field of study Teaching and Pedagogical Sciences, which is implemented in a combination of subjects as an inter-faculty study program in cooperation with the faculties of the University of Prešov.

Another popular bachelor's study program is the Hungarian language and culture in a combination in the field of study Philology, that is, preparing students for translation and interpretation from the Hungarian language into English, German, or into the Ukrainian language and vice versa.

The Institute of Hungarian Language and Culture ensures the training of future teachers of the Hungarian language and literature, especially for national schools, i.e. j. for schools with the Hungarian language of instruction and schools with the teaching of the Hungarian language, as well as interpreters and translators focused on the Hungarian language and culture.

Scientific research activities

     The task of the institute is to focus on the values and peculiarities of Hungarian culture, with the aim of providing a wide space for research into Hungarian ethnicity, culture, language, literature, history, past and present social life of the Hungarian nation in legal context links to Central European cultural development processes.

The scientific research activities of the institute's members are primarily focused on solving tasks from the theories of comparative studies, intercultural communication and multicultural relations, theory and history of Hungarian literature, interpretation of contemporary literary works and visual culture. The Institute of Hungarian Language and Culture participates in scientific research projects of domestic and foreign entities that focus on studies of the Hungarian language and literature.

     The institute also fulfills an important mission in the education of employees and students of the University of Prešov in Prešov: it implements a Hungarian language course especially for beginners. Two semesters of this course have already been successfully completed, which confirmed the ideas about the usefulness and usefulness of the Hungarian language in northeastern Slovakia. The language course offers the knowledge that interested parties need for everyday communication and when applying it in their profession, or research. The chosen teaching method is an interactive lesson, i.e. the course participant actively communicates with the lecturer and other participants. During classes, emphasis is placed on basic language skills such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. To develop these skills, it is especially necessary to master grammar and have a sufficiently large vocabulary.
