Departement offers theoretical education and practical training in health care facilities providing  clinical and community health care, mainly in the J.A.Reiman Teaching Hospital in Prešov, and others facilities in the region.

Information about the study programme 7.4.4 Midwifery
The study program of midwifery is fully compatible with the Directives of the European Commission, and European strategy of the WHO for education of regulated professions and reciprocal acceptation of diplomas (77/452/EHS, 77/453/EHS, 80/154/EHS, 80/155/EHS, 81/1057/EHS, 89/48/EEC - 1988, 92/51/EEC, XV/E/8391/396-DE and XV/E/8481/4/97-DE).
Students are trained for the profession of a registered midwife. They obtain professional competence to provide prevention, health maintenance, health promotion, treatment, rehabilitation and nursing care to women across their life spans, but mainly during pregnancy, labour and after childbirth, as well as to provide care to their families, and specific groups of women in communities, focused on prevention, health maintenance, health promotion, treatment, rehabilitation and help through the method of the nursing process.

Main areas of work
Graduates are able to work as registered midwives in the clinical health care facilities – hospitals, clinics, out-patient facilities, community health care facilities, management of midwifery care, education institutions and in the field of midwifery research.

Further education
After completing the bachelor study program students can take a specialization course in terms of legal enactments.

Contents of curriculum

  • theoretical nursing subjects in the area of theory of midwifery, terminology, facts, principles, models and conceptions, critical thinking, application of nursing process into midwifery practice and midwifery research
  • fundamentals of medical disciplines such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, obstetrics, gynaecology, neonathology, etc.
  • humanities: psychology, sociology, ethics, law, communication, pedagogy etc., management, economy, foreign languages
  • practical training in health care facilities
