KENYA INTERNATIONAL AFTERNOON

The Euraxess Centre and International Relations Office at the University of Prešov organized an intercultural event on March 3, 2026, in cooperation with guests from Kenyatta University, who are in Prešov as part of the International Credit Mobility Key Action KA171 project through the Erasmus+ program. This collaboration is taking place at the University of Prešov’s Faculty of Arts, Institute of Aesthetics and Art Culture.

The aim was to introduce our students and staff to Kenyan education, culture, customs, and cuisine.

Master’s students Joe Anyika and Vincent Lilechi prepared demonstrations of painting and musical art in the form of traditional African melodies for this afternoon. Together with their teachers, researchers John Mugubi and Anne Mwiti, and doctoral student Hilda Kagwiria, they introduced us to study opportunities at their university and the research areas they focus on at their home institution. This allowed us to exchange intercultural experiences and learn about study opportunities in another country.

During the presentation, we listened to traditional African music played on authentic instruments and sang traditional songs, while watching a painting being created on canvas in real time. The event concluded with a tasting of homemade African dishes prepared by the Kenyan students themselves, such as Ugali, Pilau, Chapati, Githeri, and the famous African tea with milk, Chai.

The cultural presentation also included tangible exhibits—a small exhibition of paintings, musical instruments, jewellery, and books related to African culture—so that participants could get a taste of Kenya through an authentic experience. The entire event took place in an informal atmosphere, and after the presentations, participants had the opportunity to discuss topics of direct interest to them with the speakers.

The event was supported by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic.
