Abstract

In the case of relations of Christianity and Judaism in the 4th century it is necessary to review their independent development in the past, from the 1st to the 3rd century, in the polytheistic Roman Empire, which inherited a completely opposing theological and philosophical thought and tradition. After this overview, you should analyze the relationship of these two monotheistic religions in the context of strengthening the position of Christianity in the Roman Empire. In this paper, the methodological assumptions should be directed to the historical and canonical perspective in relations between Judaism and Christianity, with a special focus on the most important representatives of the Roman emperors and bishops of the Church, and then to the canons of the Councils, which would help in the final proper conclusion about the relationship of Christianity and Judaism. In those analyzes it will be examine Code of Constantine the Great, Theodosius the Great, and also sermons of St. John Chrysostom and canons from the councils of Elvira (306), Arles (314), Ancyra (314), Neocaesarea (315), and Nicaea (325) that were the main councils in the beginning of the 4th century, and age of Constantine the Great.
