Abstract

In this study, we focus mainly on the method of its translation in the so-called liturgical form of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (hereinafter also as Chrysostom's liturgy), both in contemporary texts and in texts of the last and pre-last century. The aim of the paper is to present the sophistication of the translation of this terminology and at the same time to show the often neglected, even denied richness of the Orthodox bibliography (not only) before 1945. So much for the present and the past, announced by the title of the paper. The future can be estimated rather in implicity, but it also results from the possible (non) maintenance of, for example, older terminology. The methodology of processing consists in the analysis of terms, where we are based on the concept of terminological character, and in the analysis of the method of their translation, where we are based on the theory of equivalence. Therefore, maintaining the terminological character and method of translation is crucial for the adequate translation and subsequent good functioning of terminology in the language system. Our research included six Czech, Orthodox and Greek Catholic parallel translations from the same period as the German translations. Specifically, these are the oldest Czech Orthodox translation (the so-called Rank's translation from 1885), the younger canonized Orthodox Gorazd translation from 1934, the Orthodox translation by Marek Krupica and Jiří Stránský from 2008 and the Orthodox translation by Jan Baudiš from 2013.

SUMMARY

The study covered several Czech translations of the Orthodox St. John Chrysostomos Liturgy, from the 19th to the 21st centuries. It turned out that over time a certain Czech orthodox liturgical (religious) terminology became established (mainly based on lexical borrowings from Greek and Church-Slavonic), that has survived to these days. Specific choosen terms were also analyzed.
