Abstract

The philosophy of history had its foundations in the Christian faith. The magnificent works from Augustine to Hegel show that Christianity saw God's deeds in history. The paper presents an attempt to philosophically analyse the process from theology of history to the philosophy of history. It outlines Augustine's theology of history and its influence on the Enlightenment philosophical-historical projects of Voltaire, Kant, Hegel. During this period, philosophy of history has gained its importance as a medium of clarifying and strengthening belief in faith. This is only possible if history itself is experienced as something important for the existential self-understanding of humankind. The paper attempts to prove that the Christian evaluation of history and modern evaluation of subject create conditions for the formation of philosophy of history.

Keywords

Philosophy of History, Christianity, Enlightenment, Augustine Aurelius, Immanuel Kant
