Course Description

Master’s Study Programme: English Language and Anglophone Cultures

This interdisciplinary programme deepens students’ knowledge of English linguistics, literature, and the cultures of Anglophone countries. It offers advanced training in literature, linguistics, translation, interpreting, and intercultural communication, preparing graduates for careers in public service, international organizations, media, culture, and education. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, research skills, and professional language competence (C1–C2 CEFR). Graduates are equipped to continue in doctoral studies or apply their expertise in diverse professional environments shaped by globalization and cultural exchange.

Program Outcome

Acquired Knowledge

A graduate of the master’s study programme possesses deep factual, conceptual, procedural, and metacognitive knowledge across all areas of study, with a focus on its application in science and research, using standard procedures and with the ability to critically assess their relevance and appropriateness in line with the current state of knowledge. The graduate is able to synthesize cross-disciplinary theoretical and methodological knowledge from linguistics, literary studies, literary history, comparative literature, the history and culture of Anglophone countries, and the theory and practice of literary and specialized translation and interpreting. They understand theories, methods, and procedures in interdisciplinary contexts.

 

Acquired Skills

The graduate is proficient in actively acquiring new knowledge and information and applying it creatively to solve advanced theoretical and practical tasks in communicative practice. They are capable of offering new solutions through innovative methods and approaches, thus contributing to the development of the discipline. The graduate understands the basics of translation and interpreting management and has mastered specific strategies and techniques of translation. They are able to apply these in practice using computer-assisted translation tools, databases, and corpora. The graduate has fully developed oral and written communication skills in English at an advanced level (C1–C2 CEFR).They have acquired advanced digital literacy and can use information technologies effectively in the creation and editing of their own and others’ texts.

 

Acquired Competencies

The graduate is capable of independently and creatively identifying a research topic, formulating a research problem, and proposing appropriate methods and procedures for its resolution within their field of study. They can communicate the solution process and defend their arguments, both independently and within a team, which they are also capable of leading. The graduate is able to apply theoretical knowledge in reflecting on their own and others' cultural identity and in proposing solutions to issues of intercultural communication. They possess a high level of linguistic and communicative competence, allowing for appropriate oral and written expression in all key areas and styles of foreign language use. They are capable of applying and communicating their knowledge and skills in professional practice and within expert communities. The graduate is a specialist in the linguistic, geopolitical, and ethno-cultural area of the Anglophone world in the era of a dynamically changing globalized society. They are able to identify and reflect on current developments in their field and are fully competent to continue their studies at the third level of higher education (PhD) in the same or a related discipline, as well as to further expand their expertise through lifelong learning.

Entry requirements:

  • Bc. degree in English Language and Anglophone Cultures or related fields
  • English language competence at C1-C2 (CEFR level)
  • no entrance examination

Scholarships

At the University of Prešov, outstanding academic performance is rewarded through a merit-based scholarship system. Up to 10% of full-time Bachelor's and Master's degree students may receive a motivational scholarship every semester, based on previous exceptional academic achievements.

Additionally, students may apply for motivational scholarships for extraordinary achievements in sports, arts, or research. These opportunities aim to support and recognize students who not only excel academically but also contribute to university life through talent and innovation.

 

National Scholarship Scheme

Slovakia invites talented students from around the world to pursue their academic goals through the National Scholarship Scheme – Studying in Slovakia Rewards Me. This program offers a scholarship of €5,000 per academic year for two years of full-time Master’s studies at selected public higher education institutions, including the University of Prešov. Master’s program in Management is eligible under this scheme, as it falls within the national Smart Specialisation Strategy (SK RIS3 2021+).

Every year, up to 45 scholarships are awarded at the Master’s level based solely on Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores. To be considered, applicants must achieve a minimum SAT score of 1100. No other test or substitution is accepted.
