The Present
In the present, the Division of Physics consists of 4 full-time university teachers, 2 scientific workers and 1 administrative worker. In the Division, there is one university professor which DrSc. and three associated professors (docent); all of the assistant professors and scientific workers has academic degree PhD. A significant acknowledgement of the Department work was when prof. RNDr. J. Birčák, PhD., (1995) and to Doc. PaedDr. V. Šebeň, PhD., (2005) was awarded the honorary degree doctor honoris causa by the Uzhhorod National University in Uzhhorod. The physics course was completed by more than 1000 full-time and part-time students in the last 60 years. The Department provides the following accredited study programmes: bachelor’s and master’s degree in teacher training in physics and bachelor’s. In the present, the Department has the right to provide doctoral study in Theory of Physics Education. Since 2018, the Department offers further teaching qualification of physics. The Department has the right to conduct final state and rigorosum examination.
Conducted surveys on the need of the physics graduates in educational practice to confirm justification for their permanent systematic training in the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences of the University of Prešov. Thanks to the compatible educational plans with other partner faculties in Slovakia as well as deep preparation in the information technologies field, our graduates find job opportunities relatively quickly.
Teachers of the Department present the results of their work at domestic and foreign conferences. During the time of its existence, the Department has organized or co-organized several scientific conferences. At least the last four should be mentioned. In 1999, an international scientific conference Physics Education Today and After 2000 took place at the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences of the University of Prešov in Prešov under the guarantee of the Department of Physics. In 2001, it was the international scientific conference named Physics in the Cultural Context. In 2006, members of the Department of Physics organized the international scientific conference Teacher of Natural Sciences in the 21st Century. In 2009, it was an international scientific-academic conference Interests and Activities of Students – State, Problems, Trends. State conferences were met with an extraordinary response from the academic community. In 2011, a conference called Educational Technologies in Teacher Training in Natural Sciences and Technical Subjects was organized by members of the Department. In 2012, for the first time in the history of the Department, its members hosted and co-organized the 19th Conference of Slovak Physicists, which was organized at the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences of the University of Prešov. In 2015, members of the Department continued the tradition of organizing didactically focused conferences by organizing an international scientific-academic conference Natural Sciences, Education and Society. The last and at the same time one of the most important conferences organized by the Department staff was the co-organization of the 19th Conference of Czech and Slovak Physicists which took place at the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences of the University of Prešov in 2017.
One of the significant successes of the Department in 2010 is the establishment of a new research center in the Department of Physics, Mathematics and Technics which the university built by means of the structural funds of the European Union within the operational programme Research and Development. The staff of the Department succeeded in the challenge with the project Development of Thermometers and Magnetic Sensors Based on Chalcogenides for Practical Applications. Overall expenses for the project move around 367.000 EUR, out of which almost 349.000 EUR are represented by a grant from European funds. Thanks to the financial resources of the EU, a research laboratory Dynaccol was launched at the Department in 2013-2015 where it is possible to examine the electric, magnetic, and thermal properties of solids at low temperatures. After temporary operation at the Department, the newly built laboratory was placed in the newly built spaces of the scientific research center Unipolab which was ceremonially launched in 2018.
In 2018, a specialized classroom Edukolab was opened in the Division of Physics, aimed at the effective use of information technologies in the educational process. It was built thanks to the financial resources of the KEGA project.
In 2022, a specialized Laboratory of applied automation was built thanks to the financial resources of the KEGA project. Thanks to this laboratory, was developed the Measurement system uLAB, which is protected as intellectual property.
Current members of the Department continue the long-term tradition of supervision over the talented youth, the basics of which were founded in the fifties by RNDr. A. Ružický. In the academic and organizational field, the members guarantee the process of the Physics Olympiad in all categories for primary and secondary schools in the Prešov Region.
Despite the difficult conditions related to the financial demands of the physics study, by building specialized workstations as well as existing interest in the study of this subject, teachers of the Department continue building the Department and improving the training of their students. Their effort is to prepare the Department to the largest extent possible for further potential structural changes within the University of Prešov.
