The Department of Geography is recognised as a prominent scientific and research centre at the University of Prešov.
The department is permanently successful in acquisition of grant support for its research activities. The department disposes of scientific infrastructure comprising:

• Laboratory of GIS technologies
• GIS.lab - Laboratory of Open Source GIS
• Competence center of knowledge technologies for innovations of production systems in industry and services
• Educational Laboratory for Tourism and Destination Marketing (EDULAB)
• TECHNICOM University Science Park for innovative applications with the support of knowledge technologies

Scientific-research activities
Staff of the department is currently maintaining excellence across the following problems: 

• geomorphological research and modelling with emphasis on the study of geomorphological and tectonic processes with their manifestation within the relief of selected Carpathian structures,
•  geographical study of potential and modelling of the exploitation of renewable energy resources,
• complex geographical study of mesoregions and microregions from the aspect of their rational exploitation and raising the quality of life,
• urba –geographical research of intra-urban structures and urbanisation, 
• research of social-economic transformation with focus on production systems and non-productive activities,
• social-geographical and demographic research of Romany minority,  
• study of regional development and the developing impulses for the problematic regions in the context of structural politics of the European Union, 
• political-geographical and geopolitical research on various levels,
• creation and operation with geographical information databases and their cartographical interpretation, 
• didactical-geographical research with the emphasis on humanisation and creative thinking iin geography teaching.
