Institute of Music and Arts, Faculty of Arts in Prešov, was established in 2010 by the transfer of the Music and Visual Art Departments to the Faculty of Arts. Expression means of music and arts are means of teachers and students which make these departments specific, not only within the faculty but the university as a whole.
Science, research and artistic activities
The scientific research and publication activities of pedagogues at the Department of Music Art are oriented on the fields of music education, history and theory of music, ethnomusicology and are published in domestic and foreign scientific musicological and music-pedagogical magazines and collections of scientific articles. Pedagogues of the Department of Music Art are envolved in important domestic and foreign projects: KEGA, VEGA, Sokrates/Grundtvig 2, Leonardo, Visegrad projects and MVTS projects between the Czech and the Slovak republics. Editorial activities, monographs editing, publishing of the educational texts and textbooks from the international conferences, as representative outputs from the grant projects VEGA and KEGA, are related to the projects mentioned above. The artistic activities of the pedagogues are represented through the following academic artistic ensembles: Torysa Academic Folk group, Iuventus Paedagogica female choir, Nostro Canto mixed choir, Camerata academica chamber orchestra and several instrumental chamber groups of Collegium musicum.
The scientific research and publication activities of pedagogues at Department of Visual Art are aimed at the education and the history of fine arts. Teachers of the department systematically participate in the grant projects VEGA and KEGA, take part in the juries at the art competitions and realize mutual projects within international cooperation with the institutions of neighbouring countries. The artistic activitiy is the dominant factor of the pedagogues of the practical subjects. Art works and projects are presented at the exhibitions of Corporation for art KATEDRUM which operates at the Department of Visual Art, Institute of Music and Arts. The members of the department work in various organizations of artists and they also cooperate with galeries and museums in the Slovak republic and abroad.
Profile of the Graduate
Graduates of 1st and 2nd grades of study programme Teaching of Musical Art subjects in combination are based on the music-theoretical, interpretative and practical subjects and practise in the artistic ensembles. The graduates can assert themselves as cultural workers, pedagogues in a leisure center, chorirmasters of amateur ensembles or as educators. They are also capable to teach the music education at the second grade of elementary schools, music theory at elementary schools of art and the music education at the secondary pedagogical schools. They acquire the basic skills of the educational communication and they are able to orientate themselves in administrative terms of an institutional education. In the single-major specialization, the graduates are trained to teach appropriate subjects and subject groups at the primary, lower and higher grades of the secondary education, as well as they are prepared to become the teachers in the particular school units, such as the elementary schools of art.
Graduates of 1st and 2nd grades of the academic study programme Teaching of fine art subjects in combination gain qualification for the planning, projecting and realization of the educational process at the different types and levels of the creative education (primary, secondary and elementary art school). They can also apply acquired knowledge, skills and habits in the field of the individual art production, in an advertisement, propagation and in cultural, educational and edifying institutions.
