University of Presov

Faculties of Arts along with Faculties of Theology, Medicine and Law have accompanied university education from time immemorial. Faculties of Arts in Slovakia, out of which the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prešov in Prešov (abbreviated as FF PU in Prešov) is the second oldest one, have not been and are not an exception to this.
Our Faculty was established in 1959, being one of the founding faculties of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. The faculty has held its current designation (FF PU in Prešov) since January 1, 1997 when it became an organizational part of the newly established University of Prešov in Prešov under the statutory decision of the National Council of the Slovak Republic.
With the total number of teachers and students as well as with the total number of accredited study programmes (at all three levels of study), and last but not least with the total number of granted rights for holding habilitation and professor nomination proceedings, FF PU makes up the biggest faculty of the university. Out of the total number of accredited study programmes at PU, 52% of master’s and 51% of doctoral study programmes are implemented at the Faculty of Arts. Out of twenty rights granted for habilitation and inauguration at PU, thirteen of them have been granted to the Faculty of Arts.
These and other facts, including research and publication activity results, testify to FF PU having a prominent place and role in the organizational structure of the University of Prešov.
We are striving hard to create a mutually enriching spiritual community for those involved in teaching and studying, which as “universitas professorum et scholarum” gives university education a meaning. University teachers of the faculty are trying to do their best, in their capacity with students, to create optimum conditions for the development of their own and independent thinking while encouraging them not only to acquire the required theoretical knowledge but also to inspire them to original interpretations, explications and reflexions, thus contributing to their overall flexibility and personal creativity.
The Faculty of Arts of the University of Prešov in Prešov represents, to put it in symbolic terms, room for academic self-realization for all of her university teachers, research staff and students.
Conditions which make it possible to experience academic life in a meaningful and dignified manner are continuously being created in this environment..
